Preclinical Safety Standards for Optional Infant Formula Ingredients: Virtual Live Discussion

Description

Following a multi-round, anonymized online expert review process facilitated by SciPinion, the INSC’s Preclinical Expert Panel will convene for a live discussion (moderated by Paul Hanlon, Abbott Nutrition) to deliberate on key areas of agreement and disagreement that emerged from the online rounds.

The panel will focus on a central challenge in infant nutrition: the absence of a unified, science-based framework for evaluating the safety of optional infant formula ingredients. Specifically, panelists have been responding to charge questions on four topics:

• What constitutes a standard preclinical safety study package for infant formula ingredients
• When ingredients may be exempt from some or all standard studies
• What findings or ingredient properties should trigger additional, targeted safety evaluation
• What those additional studies should include, organized by physiological system (gastrointestinal, immune, neurocognitive, endocrine, and metabolic)

This session will surface and debate the questions where expert consensus was not reached in the online rounds, with the goal of informing a final review round and a published, peer-reviewed report.
